The Nigeria Customs Service Federal Operations Unit Zone A, Ikeja, Lagos acting Comptroller DC Hussein K. Ejibunu on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col Hameed Ibrahim Ali (Rtd.), on Thursday, 30th of September, 2021 handed over seized Cannabis Sativa worth ₦1.7billion to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
Handing over the substance, according to the Unit spokesperson, DSC Theophilus P. Duniya, DC Ejibunu said the seizures came in furtherance to the synergy that have been in place between the two agencies.
He said, “Customs and NDLEA have traditional responsibilities to coexist and collaborate.
“Wherever we see any infractions, that seem to affect each other, we make arrest and hand over to the appropriate quarters.
“In furtherance to this objectives, we have a total of 14, 728 kg of cannabis sativa that has been in our custody, which we want to hand over to NDLEA today with a street value of N1,728,240,000.
“The Cannabis Sativa were intercepted at different points. Some were intercepted at Seme border, some at Idiroko border, some at Iseyin waterfront in Oyo State and Ajilete in Ogun.
“These seizures were made in Lagos, Oyo and Ogun States with a street value of about N1, 728, 240.00.
“The intercepted items were suspected to have entered into the Country from Ghana”.
Responding, Barr. Ralph Igwenagu, State Commander, NDLEA, Lagos State Command, thanked NCS for the robust collaboration extended to his Agency.
He said: “On behalf of the Chairman, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Major General Buba Marwa, I thank the Controller, FOU Zone A, Ikeja, Nigeria Customs Service, for this synergy that has resulted to this huge seizures.
“From what you said, the Cannabis Sativa is close to 15tons.
“It is indeed a very big seizure. We are grateful that you have removed this quantity of cannabis sativa out of circulation.
“It is going to save the lives of many Nigerian youths. You could have imagined what will happen to us if this quantity of cannabis sativa is sent to Nigeria society. It would have resulted to a lot of youths going insane. Many of them would have lost their academic pursuit because of drug addiction. So I thank you and appreciate you. And we want to pray that this collaborative efforts and synergy will be sustained so that Nigeria will become a better society”.
